The Elderberry Mountain Pastures in the Salzkammergut

The elderberry is a rather special shrub – not only the flowers but also the leaves and the fruit are used to make a number of different products.

This year on the elderberry pastures around the Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee hikers can savour daily special elderberry dishes and different drinks and be convinced by the quality of these tasty berries. Here is the Elderberry pastures package

In the Holiday Regions of the Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee, climb to one of the elderberry pastures and upon arrival quench your thirst with a refreshing elderberry juice. Try one of the specialities such as fried elderberry flowers in batter or “Hollerkoch” (stewed elderberries). An elderberry liqueur or schnaps is ideal at the end of your meal.

On each of the special pastures you can try the prize winning elderberry flower cuvée from the Primushäusl distillery which won the gold medal of the Alpen Adria Prize 2008.

The elderberry is also renowned for its healing remedies and it is said to have mystical craft. Convince yourself when hiking in the area where you can admire the plants in their natural habitat. The elderberry liniment will refresh tired legs. At the pasture huts this comforting elixir will be offered free to try. Just rub in to revive your tired leg muscles! Small bottles can also be purchased. Furthermore in the Oberhinteregg farm shop in Faistenau you will find further elderberry products such as jams and cordials etc.

On 24th June 2012 we celebrate the fourth when the shrub is in full bloom. Children can take part in a painting competition and win great prizes. Activities will take place on all the special pastures. Further information at www.holleralmen.at
