The 500 year old historical monument Mühlgrub is a typical old smoke farm house in its original form, intigrating living, quarters, stall and working areas under one roof.
Romantic candle light evenings are held here in summer and autumn when local farmhouse produce and cider are served.
The smoke house, was first mentioned in the records of the Archbishop Burkhard von Weißbriach (1461 – 1466) as the knight´s fief ´Mulgrub´ of the Salzburg trader Caspar Venediger.
It is a typical small farmhouse of the Flachgau region of Salzburg, with a ground floor middle barn surrounded by an orchard of old fruit trees. As one enters the house there is an open fire and stove which is not connected to a chimney breast with the result that the smoke rises through the house.
Simply a wooden fire guard protects against flying sparks. Above the open fire there is a ceiling of wooden beams with openings and it is above these that the corn was stored for drying by means of the rising smoke.
To a large extent the smoke house is still in it´s original form. In 2009 part of the roof was retiled with wooden shingles and the barn renovated.
Today the monumental farmhouse Rauchhaus Mühlgrub is a meeting centre, a place to contemplate and linger – a place of happiness.
