Route Overview

The Salzkammergut Cycle Way leads through the Salzkammergut, one of the most beautiful landscapes of Austria. The area covers the provinces of Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria. The cycle way passes 13 lakes of the Salzkammergut.

The route passes the following thematic points: the festival and Mozart town of Salzburg, Lake Mondsee with collegiate church, the imperial town of Bad Ischl, the salt works in Ebensee, the thermal spas in Bad Aussee and Bad Mitterndorf, Lake Wolfgang with the pilgrimage village of St. Wolfgang, the Mozart village of St. Gilgen, the Hallstatt world-cultural heritage area, Lake Grundlsee, Gmunden with Ort castle, the cheese world of the Schlädorf show village.

Some stages can be covered by bus, train or boat. The Salzkammergut Cycle Way is a loop trail that can be accessed at any village along the route.

Route length, altitude differences, signposting, road conditions and schedule
The Salzkammergut Cycle Way covers 345km. The total altitude gain is 1,850m. The trail is signposted in both directions with the signposts listed above. Most of the way is asphalt-covered; exceptions are the forestry tracks in Bad Mitterndorf – Gössl/Grundlsee and Blaa Alm – Rettenbachalm – Bad Ischl. To cycle all of the way it is recommended to take out a week’s time.

Getting there and back
By train: the Salzburg main train station is a perfect starting point that can be easily reached from Vienna, Graz or Munich. Bad Ischl, Bad Aussee or Attnang-Puchheim are also perfect starting points.
By car: Westautobahn A1 and the federal roads of the Salzkammergut cover all main villages of the Salzkammergut.

The best season
The best months for cycling along the route are May, June, September and October. In July and August there is main season; more traffic is likely and it might be difficult to get accommodation for one night only.

The right bicycle
Ideal are modern trekking bikes with 21 gears. Touring bikes or city bikes with fewer gears are less suitable because of the uphill sections.

Accommodation
There are hotels and guesthouses in almost all villages along the route. Outside of the main season months you should have no problem to find an accommodation for one night only. The local tourist boards are happy to assist you in finding the right accommodation. In July and August it is recommended to book your accommodation in advance.

Package deals or individual travelling
Several tour operators offer cycling tours including luggage transport and booked accommodation along the Salzkammergut Cycle Way. On request rental bikes and guides with accompanying cars are provided.

Possible combinations
Tauernradweg Cycle Way, Ennsradweg Cycle Way, Römerradweg Cycle Way
